What's on
Talk and guided tours of Iffley’s almost unaltered Romanesque church, and a new gateway between the church and its historic surroundings.
‘The Architecture of Iffley Church’, a talk by Geoffrey Tyack at 14:30 in the church. Free. No booking required. Please arrive by 14:20 if you wish to attend the talk. Volunteers will welcome you in the churchyard from 14:00-17:00.
The church of St Mary the Virgin, Iffley is described by Pevsner as ‘one of the best preserved twelfth century churches in England’. Its wealth of carved stones and curious, thought-provoking detail create a place of extraordinary beauty and peace. It stands above the River Thames just over a mile downstream from Folly Bridge and is still surrounded by ancient farmhouses and fields. Thanks to the new gate between the churchyard and Court Place Gardens, visitors can explore the historic connection between the church and the river.
Volunteer guides will be offering informal tours from 15:15-16:30.
- Disabled access: The church is accessible with a wheelchair. Grass areas around the churchyard are bumpy. A disabled toilet is available in the Church Hall, 100 yards from the church. Please ask one of the volunteers on site to unlock the Hall.
