What's on
Discover the rich history, stunning architecture, and tranquil gardens of St John’s College, Oxford – and enjoy a glimpse into all aspects of the life of the college during Oxford Open Doors.
St John’s College was founded in 1555 and is situated in the heart of the city. One of the University of Oxford’s larger colleges, St John’s offers the visitor historical buildings in traditional quadrangles and award-winning modern architecture, all set within beautiful gardens.
We look forward to welcoming you to Oxford Open Doors. The College will be open from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday with a mix of talks, exhibitions, guided and self-guided tours, as well as a special free concert on 13 September.
New for 2025:
- Children’s Guide to St John’s College: a short illustrated guide to the history of St John’s and its architecture, written for children in Key Stage 2 (aged 7–11). In it, we explain the history of the magnificent seventeenth-century Canterbury Quadrangle, opened with a party fit for a king in 1636, guide visitors through our recently-restored historic libraries, and explore the story of the crypt below our chapel.
- Piano recital by acclaimed pianist Viv McLean to celebrate the launch of the International Piano Series at St John’s College, 2025/26 (free concert, St John’s Auditorium, 18.00, 13 September)
Our talks, exhibitions, and tours will be run as drop-in events on a first come, first served basis. However, our free piano recital on the evening of 13 September will be ticketed. Tickets for this recital will be booked via Eventbrite.
Disabled access: St John’s gardens and quads are fully accessible for wheelchair users and for prams/buggies. Dogs are not allowed. Disabled toilet available. Some student rooms will be open for viewing and these are not accessible to wheelchair users.
Child-friendly games, including giant connect 4, quoits and skittles, will be set out on one of our lawns. We will also be organising a ‘Find the lambs’ treasure hunt for children.
