Sale of Nuneham Park Estate

Oxford University is treating Nuneham Park, with its Grade I listed garden designed by Capability Brown for its views of the Thames and Oxford, the Carfax Conduit and the adjoining model village of Nuneham Courtenay, as a purely financial asset and has transferred responsibility for it to the Oxford Endowment Fund who have put it on the market.

OPT Trustees wrote to the Vice Chancellor asking the University to think again, or at the very least, to provide some safeguards over public access and management of this important historic landscape.  The reply said no and that we simply rely on the protection afforded by its listed status – something quite different to the listing of buildings and with little power to prevent inappropriate development.  As a result OPT felt it important to ensure that people were made aware of the sale and still hope that they will think again .

There was a front page article in the Oxford Times 19 January and a letter in The Times 20 January together with an article on page 12.
