St Clare's, Oxford - St Clare's, Saturday 10th September, 10:00 - 12:00
St Clare's Oxford is an independent, co-educational, day and boarding sixth-form college located on the Banbury Road, near Summertown.
We were founded in 1953 by two remarkable and inspirational women: Anne Dreydel and Pamela Morris. Their motivation for establishing an international college can be summarised in the following sentence. “We felt we should not tell people how to think, we should bring them together so that they could make contact with people who had a wide range of differing views.”
It is doubtful whether the founders could have anticipated how successful the College would become. The first lessons were held in a single room in a house in Lathbury Road. Today, the College is made up of 27 large Victorian and Edwardian houses to which purpose-built facilities have been added. These include a beautiful library with over 35,000 volumes, a dining room, and a popular student café.
