Port Meadow Bailey Bridge - Port Meadow Bailey Bridge Talk, Saturday 10th September, 14.00
Port Meadow Bailey Bridge – this modular steel military bridge has been in use for 75 years and was this year added to the Oxfordshire Heritage Asset Register. It was a highly innovative design for its time, with an amazing story, making a huge contribution towards ending WW2. Very few bridges of this vintage now remain in the public domain. Described at the time as a “Wonder Bridge”, Supreme Commander Eisenhower put it in his top 3 technological and engineering developments of WW2. This 30-45 minute talk at the bridge will cover the bridges development, its uses, construction, why this particular bridge is here and its future.
