Virtual event via Zoom Liz Woolley - From Axtell to Zacharias: The men who built Oxford - Wednesday 23 September, 5pm (virtual talk)
From Axtell to Zacharias: The men who built Oxford with local historian Liz Woolley.
By the late 1880s there were more than seventy speculative developers and building firms whose activities shaped Oxford’s physical layout. They included building societies (which were often politically-motivated), large and small speculative builders, and middle-class men of business who dabbled in property development. This talk will explore the enormous influence that these organisations and people had over the city’s commercial, social, religious and political life.
