Members Only - Wolf Hall: a conversation about truth, history and literature
Hilary Mantel’s trilogy of novels on Thomas Cromwell and the court of Henry VIII have transformed our understanding of this world and the environment in which a series of well-known, perhaps overfamiliar figures operated. But is it true? Is it history? What might historical fiction add to our understanding of the past and how we view it? This talk brings together a historian and a literary scholar to debate this question and others. It will anticipate the imminent screening of the BBC’s adaptation of the third part of the trilogy, ‘The Mirror and the Light’, discussing Mantel’s depiction of the Tudor world on page, stage, and screen.
