History and Science come together to reveal more secrets at Oxford Castle

The Castle Mound, Oxford

In 2008, work on the Mound revealed tantalizing glimpses of the C13th stone keep which once crowned the top. In 2009 Oxford Archaeology returned to the Castle to probe more deeply into the secrets of the Mound. A detailed geophysical survey (using magnetometry, resistivity and ground penetrating radar) carried out in April identified a number of possible features and in July  trenches were put in to explore these further.  The results, which included evidence of an early floor surface, and of damage to the tower walls which may have contributed to the keeps final collapse, will be included in the full archaeological report on the Castle Site, to be published by Oxford Archaeology later in 2010.

An open Archaeology Day at Oxford Castle is planned for Sunday July 18th.  Check back for further details later.
