A jewel in a sea of green
Since 1927, OPT has acquired – through purchase, gift or bequest - pockets of land across the city. Today we own around 1,000 acres of green space in and around Oxford. We're proud to be custodians of this land, which we care for on behalf of the public, maintaining it sustainably and providing access for everyone.
Our Priorities
We will:
• encourage use by a diverse range of people
• find opportunities to inform those who visit whilst creating a virtual presence for those who cannot
• be expert in our care for the landscape, prioritising biodiversity and sustainability
• seek more control over vulnerable and important sites, whether through ownership or covenants
• continue to invest in our land volunteers
• demonstrate exemplary management

Tree Planting
We have a long history of planting trees for royal events, beginning in 1937 when OPT celebrated the coronation of King George VI by planting the fastigiate hornbeams on Sunderland Avenue. These have become immortalised by Philip Pullman in the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy. Sir Philip continued the tradition by planting our Platinum Jubilee Oak at Larkins Lane in 2022 . With clear blue skies overhead, Sir Philip, who loves trees, brought his special magic as he chatted with the Year 6 Writing Group from St. Andrew’s School, many of whom had brought their books along for him to sign.
