Pie in the Sky - the first Englishman to fly

"Such a Phenomenon as was never before beheld in the Hemisphere of Oxford!" A short city-centre walk in the footsteps of James Sadler, the High Street pastry chef who became the first Englishman to build and fly an air balloon in 1784. Led by Sadler's biographer, local historian Mark Davies, the walk will pass by the main sites associated with the early years of this aeronautical pioneer, as well as the significant locations - religious, domestic, commercial and academic - of his ancestors and successors, who traded as blacksmiths, gunsmiths, tailors, cooks, and confectioners. Included in the tour is privileged access to St Edmund Hall, the Sadlers' former family church of St Peter-in-the-East. Finishing at Sanders of Oxford who will kindly be giving OPT members 10% discount in store after the walk.
