Since taking possession of the Lakes in Spring 2010 the Trust has been assessing and understanding the site and undertaking essential maintenance.
We are now in a position to start work, and are delighted to be able to announce that we have been given a Grantscape Community Greenspace Challenge Award to help with the funding of an ambitious project to improve biodiversity and public access to the site.
Local community involvement is very much part of our scheme and we are looking forward to working with local volunteers to move things forward. We held a very successful working party in November (see side bar) to start to clear non native vegetation from the site, and hope to hold more in 2012 - please contact us if you would like to go on our mailing list for this.
We hope to start the main works on the site in early 2012.
History records that there was once a little house on stilts on the site which could only be reached by punt at times of flooding. Today there is no trace of the house and the two Lakes, described as 'Pleasure Lakes' in early descriptions had been the ownership of the Kirk family for two generations prior to coming to the Trust.
