Simon's Land, Sandford on Thames

The College BargeThis half acre riverside garden sits by the Thames at Sandford looking out across the Trust's land at Kennington.   It is now looked after by the Trust thanks to the generous gift of Mr & Mrs J Simons.   The bank was once the home of the  former Magdalen College Barge (then known as the Karis Houseboat) which can now be seen moored at the Swan at Streatley-on-Thames.

We are delighted that our plants to create a wetland garden are beginning to take shape. Essential tree work was undertaken in winter 2010, and in spring 2011 the top end of the garden was landscaped to create a seating area with a board walk leading down the slope towards the water. Volunteers have helped plant native trees and shrubs and damp loving plants for improved biodiversity. We hope the natural pond created through the removal of non-native species will self colonise over the winter.

We thank the Four Pillars, Sandford for their support for this project, and the Oxford Conservation Volunteers for their help in clearance work.
