St George's Tower
Oxford Preservation Trust has been creating a new visitor attraction, learning centre, café and public square at Oxford Castle. The Trust's most ambitious project to date, realised thanks to a £3.8 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, Unlocked - Oxford Castle is now complete, and open to the public.
The site of Oxford's Castle and Prison was re-developed following the closure of the Prison in 1996 and its subsequent purchase by Oxfordshire County Council from the Home Office.
Part of the site was developed by Oxford Castle Limited, who transformed the Victorian prison wing into a luxurious hotel and created restaurants and bars, an art gallery, flats and a series of public spaces. Details on all these are available from www.oxfordcastle.com
Alongside these, St George's Tower, the Crypt of St George's Chapel, the Castle Mound, and the prison's D Wing and Debtors' Tower were transformed by Oxford Preservation Trust into Unlocked - Oxford Castle.
